Jim Backus was an American actor, voice actor, and comedian. He was born on February 25, 1913 in Cleveland, Ohio. He is best known for his role as Thurston Howell III on the 1960s sitcom Gilligan's Island and for providing the voice of the cartoon character Mr. Magoo. Backus began his career in radio in the 1930s, appearing on shows such as The Jack Benny Program and The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet. He made his film debut in 1941's The Big Store and went on to appear in over 100 films and television shows. Backus was married to Henny Backus from 1938 until his death in 1989. He had two children, a son, John, and a daughter, Brooke. Backus was nominated for an Emmy Award for his role in the television series The New Phil Silvers Show. He was also nominated for a Golden Globe Award for his role in the film The Reluctant Astronaut. At the time of his death, Backus had an estimated net worth of $10 million. After attending preparatory school in his hometown Cleveland, Backus enrolled at the American Academy of Dramatic Art, to ply his trade. While waiting for parts, he did radio and became friends with such future notables as Garson Kanin and Keenan Wynn. Backus stuck it out and soon was doing motion pictures in addition to radio.
