Jim Bancks was an Australian cartoonist and creator of the comic strip character, Ginger Meggs. He was born in Enmore, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia on 10 May 1889. He was the son of a blacksmith and attended school at the local public school. Bancks began his career as a cartoonist in 1906, when he was hired by the Sydney Bulletin. He created the comic strip character, Ginger Meggs, in 1921, which became one of the most popular comic strips in Australia. He also created other comic strips such as The Potts, The Baxters, and The Smiths. Bancks was a prolific cartoonist and his work was published in newspapers and magazines throughout Australia and the United Kingdom. He was also a successful author, writing several books about his comic strips. Bancks died in 1952 at the age of 63. He was survived by his wife and two sons. He was posthumously inducted into the Australian Cartoonists' Hall of Fame in 2003. Jim Bancks had an estimated net worth of $1 million at the time of his death.
