Jim Gillespie is a British film director, producer, and screenwriter. He is best known for directing the horror films I Know What You Did Last Summer (1997) and The Phantom of the Opera (2004). Gillespie was born on 4 November 1957 in Glasgow, Scotland. He attended the University of Edinburgh, where he studied film and television. After graduating, he worked as a production assistant on various television shows and films. Gillespie made his directorial debut in 1995 with the British television movie The Grotesque. He followed this up with the horror film I Know What You Did Last Summer (1997), which was a commercial success and spawned two sequels. He then directed the romantic comedy All I Wanna Do (1998) and the horror film Urban Legends: Final Cut (2000). In 2004, Gillespie directed the film adaptation of Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical The Phantom of the Opera. The film was a box office success and earned three Academy Award nominations. Gillespie has since directed the horror films The Uninvited (2009) and The Quiet Ones (2014). He has also produced several films, including the horror film The Hole (2009).
