Jimmie Driftwood was an American songwriter, singer, and musician. He was born in West Richwoods, Arkansas, on June 20, 1907. He is best known for writing the song "The Battle of New Orleans," which was a number one hit for Johnny Horton in 1959. Driftwood began writing songs as a child, and by the time he was a teenager, he was performing in local venues. He moved to Nashville in the 1930s and began writing songs for various artists, including Gene Autry, Roy Acuff, and Ernest Tubb. He also wrote the song "Tennessee Stud," which was later recorded by Johnny Cash. Driftwood released several albums of his own material, including "Songs of the Pioneers" (1958) and "The Unforgettable Jimmie Driftwood" (1960). He was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1970. Driftwood died on July 12, 1998, at the age of 91. He was survived by his wife, two sons, and two daughters. At the time of his death, he had written over 6,000 songs.
