Blos attended Smith College, where she earned a bachelor's degree in 1950. She then went on to earn a master's degree in English from Columbia University in 1951. Blos has written several novels for adults, including The Summer of the Great-Grandmother, which was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in 1981. She has also written several books for children, including The Changeling, which was a National Book Award finalist in 1982. Blos is married to Dr. Robert Blos, a psychiatrist.
