JoBeth Williams is an American actress and television director. She is best known for her roles in the films Poltergeist, The Big Chill, and Stir Crazy. She has also appeared in television series such as The Client, Grey's Anatomy, and Private Practice.
Williams was born in Houston, Texas, and raised in San Antonio. She attended Trinity University in San Antonio, where she majored in English and theater. She began her acting career in the late 1970s, appearing in several television movies and miniseries.
In 1982, Williams starred in the horror classic Poltergeist, playing the mother of a family terrorized by supernatural forces. The film was a huge success, and Williams received a Saturn Award nomination for Best Actress. She went on to star in the 1983 comedy The Big Chill, playing a woman whose college friends reunite for a funeral. The film was a critical and commercial success, and Williams received a BAFTA Award nomination for Best Actress.
In the late 1980s, Williams starred in the comedy films Stir Crazy and The Day the Earth Stood Still. She also appeared in the television series The Client, Grey's Anatomy, and Private Practice.

She was inducted into the Texas Film Hall of Fame on March 10, 2006 in Austin, Texas. The other inductees were Matthew McConaughey, Kris Kristofferson, Cybill Shepherd and Lyle Lovett.
