Jochen Gerz is a German artist and filmmaker who has been active since the 1960s. He is best known for his work in the fields of conceptual art, public art, and performance art. He has also worked in photography, video, and installation art. Gerz was born in Berlin in 1940 and studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Berlin from 1959 to 1964. He then moved to Paris, where he worked as an assistant to the French artist Jean Tinguely. In 1966, he returned to Germany and began to work as an independent artist. Gerz's work often focuses on the relationship between art and politics, and he has created numerous public art projects that address issues of social justice and human rights. He has also created works that explore the relationship between art and memory, such as his Monument Against Fascism in Hamburg, Germany. Gerz has received numerous awards for his work, including the Golden Lion at the Venice Biennale in 1990 and the Wolfgang Hahn Prize in 2006. He currently lives and works in Paris.
