He was a two-time NCAA singles champion in 1947 and 1948, and a three-time NCAA doubles champion in 1947, 1948, and 1949. He was also a member of the U.S. Davis Cup team in 1950 and 1951. Hackett was a successful amateur player, winning the U.S. National Indoor Singles Championship in 1950 and the U.S. National Clay Court Singles Championship in 1951. He also won the U.S. National Clay Court Doubles Championship in 1951 with partner Don McNeill. Hackett turned professional in 1952 and competed on the professional tour until the mid-1960s. He won several professional tournaments, including the U.S. Pro Singles Championship in 1954 and the U.S. Pro Doubles Championship in 1955.
