He was best known for writing the lyrics to the song "The Christmas Song" (also known as "Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire"), which was first recorded by Nat King Cole in 1946. Sherman began his career as a songwriter in the 1940s, writing for various artists including Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra, and Ella Fitzgerald. He also wrote the lyrics for the Broadway musicals "High Button Shoes" and "Bells Are Ringing". Sherman was married to his wife, Ruth, for over 60 years. He had two children, a son and a daughter. Sherman died on April 8, 2018 at the age of 91. At the time of his death, he was estimated to have a net worth of $2 million.
