Joel Quarrington is a Canadian double bassist and composer. He is considered one of the world's leading double bassists, and has performed with many of the world's leading orchestras and chamber ensembles. He has also composed works for the double bass, and has released several recordings. Born in Toronto, Quarrington began playing the double bass at the age of nine. He studied at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto, and later at the Juilliard School in New York. He has performed with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, the National Arts Centre Orchestra, the Montreal Symphony Orchestra, the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, and the London Symphony Orchestra, among others. Quarrington has also performed with many of the world's leading chamber ensembles, including the Tokyo String Quartet, the Orford String Quartet, and the St. Lawrence String Quartet. He has also performed with the Canadian Brass, the Canadian Opera Company, and the Canadian Chamber Ensemble. Quarrington has released several recordings, including his solo album, "Joel Quarrington: The Double Bassist," and his chamber music album, "Joel Quarrington and Friends." He has also composed works for the double bass, including "Concerto for Double Bass and Orchestra," "Sonata for Double Bass and Piano," and "Suite for Double Bass and Piano." Quarrington is currently the principal double bassist of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, and is a professor of double bass at the University of Toronto. He is also a member of the Order of Canada.
