He attended the University of Southern California, where he studied film and television production. After graduating, he began working in the television industry, first as a production assistant and then as a director. Amero has been married twice. His first marriage was to actress and singer Linda Gray, with whom he had two children. His second marriage was to actress and producer Karen Black, with whom he had one child.
