John B. Gordon was an American soldier, politician, and author. He was born in Upson County, Georgia, and served in the Confederate Army during the American Civil War. After the war, he served as a U.S. Senator from Georgia and was the 68th Governor of Georgia from 1886 to 1890. Gordon was born on February 6, 1832, in Upson County, Georgia. He attended the University of Georgia, where he was a member of the Phi Kappa Literary Society. He graduated in 1853 and was admitted to the bar in 1854. Gordon served in the Confederate Army during the American Civil War, rising to the rank of lieutenant general. He was wounded several times and was captured at the Battle of Appomattox Court House. After the war, he returned to Georgia and was elected to the U.S. Senate in 1873. He served in the Senate until 1880, when he resigned to become the 68th Governor of Georgia. He served as governor from 1886 to 1890. After leaving office, Gordon wrote several books, including Reminiscences of the Civil War (1903) and Studies in the Life of Jesus (1908). He died on January 9, 1904, in Miami, Florida.
