John Bucksbaum is an American businessman and entrepreneur. He is the founder and former CEO of General Growth Properties, one of the largest shopping mall operators in the United States. He was born in 1957 in Chicago, Illinois. Bucksbaum graduated from the University of Arizona in 1979 with a degree in business administration. He began his career in the real estate industry in 1980, working for his father's company, Joseph P. Bucksbaum & Co. In 1984, he founded General Growth Properties, which grew to become one of the largest shopping mall operators in the United States. In 2008, Bucksbaum stepped down as CEO of General Growth Properties and was replaced by his brother, Matthew Bucksbaum. He remained on the board of directors until 2013. As of 2021, John Bucksbaum's net worth is estimated to be $1.2 billion.
