John Dankworth was a British jazz composer, saxophonist, and clarinetist. He was a major figure in the British jazz scene for over 50 years, and was the leader of the John Dankworth Orchestra. He composed the theme music for the British television series The Avengers, and wrote the score for the 1967 film Modesty Blaise. He was awarded an OBE in 1974 and a CBE in 1992. Dankworth was born in Woodford, Essex, England, and began playing the saxophone at the age of nine. He studied at the Royal Academy of Music in London, and later at the Guildhall School of Music. He began his career as a professional musician in the late 1940s, playing with the Ted Heath Orchestra and the Johnny Dankworth Seven. In the 1950s, Dankworth formed his own big band, the John Dankworth Orchestra, which featured some of the leading British jazz musicians of the time, including Ronnie Scott, Tubby Hayes, and Stan Tracey. The band toured extensively in the UK and Europe, and recorded several albums. Dankworth also composed extensively for film and television, including the theme music for the British television series The Avengers. He wrote the score for the 1967 film Modesty Blaise, and composed the music for the BBC television series The Jazz Age. Dankworth was awarded an OBE in 1974 and a CBE in 1992. He died in February 2010, aged 82.
