John G. Williams Jr. was an American businessman and philanthropist. He was the chairman and CEO of the Williams Companies, a natural gas pipeline and energy company. He was born in Portland, Oregon, and attended the University of Oregon, where he earned a degree in business administration. Williams began his career in the oil and gas industry in 1948, working for the Standard Oil Company of California. He joined the Williams Companies in 1956, and was appointed president and CEO in 1971. He served as chairman and CEO from 1983 until his retirement in 1997. Williams was a generous philanthropist, donating millions of dollars to various causes, including the University of Oregon, the Oregon Health & Science University, and the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry. He was also a major supporter of the arts, donating to the Portland Art Museum and the Oregon Symphony. Williams was married to his wife, Mary, for over 50 years. He passed away in 2017 at the age of 93.
