He was promoted to the editorial board in 1989 and has been a columnist since 1997. He is known for his conservative views and his columns often focus on politics, culture, and the city of Chicago. Kass has won numerous awards for his work, including the Pulitzer Prize for Commentary in 2008. He is also a member of the Chicago Journalism Hall of Fame. He graduated from Harold L. Richards High School in the class of 1974, and was a member of the varsity football team and the yearbook staff. He studied film at Columbia College in Chicago and worked in the student newspaper there but he never graduated.
