John Kay is a German-Canadian musician, singer, and songwriter best known as the lead singer and frontman of the rock band Steppenwolf. He was born in Tilsit, East Prussia, Germany (now Sovetsk, Russia) on April 12, 1944. Kay began his musical career in the mid-1960s, playing in various bands in Toronto, Canada. In 1967, he formed Steppenwolf with guitarist Michael Monarch, bassist Rushton Moreve, and drummer Jerry Edmonton. The band released their self-titled debut album in 1968, which featured the hit single "Born to Be Wild". The song became an anthem of the counterculture movement and was later featured in the 1969 film Easy Rider. Throughout the 1970s, Kay and Steppenwolf released several more albums, including Monster (1969), For Ladies Only (1971), and Slow Flux (1974). In 1976, Kay left the band and embarked on a solo career. He released his debut solo album Forgotten Songs and Unsung Heroes in 1977, followed by the albums All in Good Time (1978) and Paradise Alley (1979). In the 1980s, Kay reunited with Steppenwolf and released several more albums, including Rise & Shine (1991) and Live at 25 (1993). He continues to tour and perform with the band to this day.
