John L. Balderston was an American playwright and screenwriter. He was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on October 22, 1889. He attended the University of Pennsylvania and graduated in 1911. Balderston began his career as a journalist, writing for the Philadelphia Public Ledger and the Philadelphia North American. He then moved to New York City and wrote for the New York Evening Post and the New York World. In the 1920s, Balderston began writing plays. His first play, "The Shanghai Gesture," was produced in 1924. He went on to write several other plays, including "Berkeley Square," "The Cat and the Canary," and "The Barretts of Wimpole Street." In the 1930s, Balderston began writing for the movies. He wrote the screenplay for the classic horror film "Frankenstein" (1931). He also wrote the screenplay for the classic horror film "Dracula" (1931). Balderston wrote the screenplay for the classic musical "The Wizard of Oz" (1939). He also wrote the screenplay for the classic romantic comedy "My Man Godfrey" (1936). Balderston wrote the screenplay for the classic adventure film "The Adventures of Robin Hood" (1938). He also wrote the screenplay for the classic romantic drama "Gone with the Wind" (1939). Balderston died on April 28, 1954 in Los Angeles, California. He was 64 years old. John L. He and Peggy Webling sold the film rights to their stage adaptation of "Frankenstein" to Universal Pictures for $20,000 plus 1 percent of the gross earnings. They were involved in protracted litigation with Universal over royalties from the seven "Frankenstein" sequels. They reached an out of court settlement in 1953 that Balderston described as "highly satisfactory".

In the early 1920's, he became editor of Outlook Magazine in London and then head of the London bureau for the New York World, a job he held until the publication folded in 1931. Thereafter, he worked steadily in Hollywood as a screenwriter, usually in collaboration with others.
