He was a successful athlete, winning the 1500 metres at the 1954 Commonwealth Games and setting a world record for the mile in 1954. He was also a successful businessman, serving as the managing director of the Australian Gas Light Company from 1975 to 1985. In 2001, he was appointed Governor of Victoria, a position he held until 2006. He was also a member of the Order of Australia and was awarded the Centenary Medal in 2001.
