John Lee Beatty is an American scenic designer who has been active in the theater industry since the 1970s. He has designed sets for Broadway, Off-Broadway, regional theater, and opera productions. He has won two Tony Awards for Best Scenic Design, for The Nance in 2013 and The Color Purple in 2005. Beatty was born in Palo Alto, California, on April 4, 1948. He attended the University of California, Berkeley, where he studied architecture and design. He then moved to New York City to pursue a career in theater. Beatty has designed sets for over 100 Broadway productions, including The Book of Mormon, The Color Purple, The Nance, The Heiress, The Best Man, The Little Foxes, The Crucible, and The Elephant Man. He has also designed sets for Off-Broadway productions, regional theater, and opera. Beatty has won two Tony Awards for Best Scenic Design, for The Nance in 2013 and The Color Purple in 2005. He has also been nominated for five other Tony Awards, for The Best Man in 2012, The Little Foxes in 1981, The Elephant Man in 1979, The Crucible in 2002, and The Heiress in 1995. Beatty is married to costume designer Jane Greenwood. They have two children. He currently resides in New York City.
