John McClelland is a British politician who served as a Member of Parliament (MP) for Belfast East from 1983 to 2005. He was born on 7 December 1955 in Belfast, Northern Ireland. McClelland was educated at Belfast Royal Academy and Queen's University Belfast, where he graduated with a degree in law. He was called to the Bar of Northern Ireland in 1979. McClelland was first elected to the House of Commons in 1983, representing Belfast East. He held the seat until 2005, when he retired from politics. During his time in Parliament, he served as a Parliamentary Private Secretary to the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland from 1989 to 1992. McClelland is currently a member of the Northern Ireland Assembly, representing the Belfast East constituency. He is also a member of the Northern Ireland Executive, serving as Minister for Social Development. McClelland is married to Anne, and they have two children.
