He is best known for his work with the Mahavishnu Orchestra, as well as his solo albums and collaborations with other musicians. McLaughlin was born in Edmonton, London, United Kingdom on October 29, 1954. He began playing guitar at the age of 11, and by the age of 15 he was playing professionally. He studied at the Royal Academy of Music in London, and later moved to the United States to pursue a career in jazz. McLaughlin has released over 30 albums as a leader or co-leader, and has collaborated with a wide range of musicians, including Miles Davis, Carlos Santana, Herbie Hancock, and Chick Corea.
