He is a professor of physics at the University of Oxford and a professor of materials science at the University of Cambridge. Pethica has made significant contributions to the field of nanomechanics, including the development of the atomic force microscope and the development of the scanning tunneling microscope. He has also made important contributions to the field of nanomaterials, including the development of nanotubes and nanowires. Pethica has received numerous awards and honors for his work, including the Royal Society's Hughes Medal, the Institute of Physics' Faraday Medal, and the Royal Society's Rumford Medal. In October 2007, Pethica was made the Chief Scientific Advisor at the UK's National Physical Laboratory, the UK’s National Measurement Institute.

In February 2005, it was announced that Pethica will be the director of the Naughton Institute which Will House CRANN, a new purpose built nanotechnology centre in Trinity College Dublin.

2001

In 2001, Pethica was one of the first ten people awarded an S.F.I. principal investigator award. Following the award, he transferred his activities from Oxford to Dublin.
