John R. MacArthur is an American journalist and author. He is the president and publisher of Harper's Magazine, a position he has held since 1980. He is also the author of several books, including The Selling of Free Trade: NAFTA, Washington, and the Subversion of American Democracy (2000), Second Front: Censorship and Propaganda in the Gulf War (1992), and The Outrageous Barriers to Democracy in America (2004). MacArthur was born in New York City on June 4, 1956. He graduated from Harvard University in 1978 with a degree in history. After college, he worked as a reporter for the Chicago Sun-Times and the Chicago Tribune. He then joined Harper's Magazine in 1980, becoming its president and publisher in 1984. MacArthur has received numerous awards for his work, including the National Magazine Award for General Excellence in 1992 and the National Magazine Award for Public Interest in 2000. Though John D. MacArthur disinherited his son J. Roderick MacArthur, the latter served on the board of the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation until his death in 1984. In 1980, John R. MacArthur persuaded the foundation to partner in creating and funding a Harper's Magazine Foundation to acquire and operate the magazine of the same name. This new entity acquired Harper's Magazine (which was then losing nearly $2 million per year and was on the verge of ceasing publication) for $250,000. He became president and publisher of Harper's Magazine in 1983.
