John Shumate is an American former professional basketball player. He played college basketball at the University of South Carolina and was drafted by the Chicago Bulls in the 1974 NBA Draft. He played for the Bulls, the New York Knicks, and the San Antonio Spurs during his NBA career. Shumate was born in Greenville, South Carolina, and attended Wade Hampton High School. He was a two-time All-State selection and was named to the South Carolina Basketball Hall of Fame in 2003. Shumate attended the University of South Carolina, where he was a three-time All-ACC selection and was named to the ACC All-Tournament team in 1974. He was also named to the All-ACC Academic team in 1974. Shumate was drafted by the Chicago Bulls in the 1974 NBA Draft. He played for the Bulls, the New York Knicks, and the San Antonio Spurs during his NBA career. He averaged 8.2 points and 4.2 rebounds per game in his NBA career. Shumate retired from basketball in 1983 and returned to South Carolina, where he worked in the banking industry. He is currently the president of the South Carolina Bankers Association. As of 2021, John Shumate's net worth is estimated to be roughly $2 million.
