He is best known for his work on films such as Legends of the Fall (1994), Braveheart (1995), The Thin Red Line (1998), and The Last Samurai (2003). Toll began his career in the film industry in the late 1970s, working as a camera assistant on films such as The Deer Hunter (1978) and Apocalypse Now (1979). He then moved up to become a cinematographer on films such as The River (1984) and The Natural (1984). Toll has been nominated for two Academy Awards for Best Cinematography, for Legends of the Fall and Braveheart.
