John W. Bratton was born in New Castle, Delaware, on 21 January 1867. He was the son of a music teacher and a piano tuner. He began studying music at an early age and eventually attended the National Conservatory of Music in New York City. Bratton was a prolific composer, writing over 500 pieces of music, including marches, waltzes, and other popular music. He is best known for his marches, including "The Stars and Stripes Forever" and "The Washington Post March". He also wrote the popular song "In the Good Old Summertime". Bratton was a successful composer and arranger, and his music was performed by many of the leading orchestras of the day. He was also a successful music publisher, and his works were published by several major music publishers. Bratton was married twice, first to Mary Elizabeth Bratton and then to Mary Elizabeth Smith. He had two children, a son and a daughter. John W. Bratton died on 28 April, 1945 in New York City. He was 78 years old.
