John Ward was educated at the University of Oxford, where he studied law. He was called to the bar in 1951 and practiced as a barrister until his election to Parliament in 1970. John Ward was first elected to Parliament in 1970, representing the constituency of East Ham North. He held the seat until 1997, when he retired from politics. During his time in Parliament, he served as a Parliamentary Private Secretary to the Home Secretary from 1979 to 1983, and as a Minister of State for the Home Office from 1983 to 1987. John Ward was a strong advocate for law and order, and was a vocal opponent of the legalization of drugs. He was also a strong supporter of the monarchy and the Church of England. From 1994 until the 1997 General Election, Ward was the Parliamentary Private Secretary to the Prime Minister, John Major. As such, he did not contribute in any debates during the last three years of his parliamentary career. Following Major's resignation as Prime Minister in May 1997, Ward was knighted in the 1997 Prime Minister's Resignation Honours.
