John Waters is an American filmmaker, actor, writer, and visual artist. He is best known for his cult films, including Pink Flamingos, Hairspray, Serial Mom, and Cry-Baby. He was born on April 22, 1946 in Baltimore, Maryland. Waters attended the Calvert School and then the Boys' Latin School of Maryland. He studied at New York University's Tisch School of the Arts and the Maryland Institute College of Art. Waters began making short films in the 1960s, and his first feature film, Mondo Trasho, was released in 1969. He gained notoriety for his 1972 film Pink Flamingos, which featured Divine, a drag queen, in the lead role. His other films include Polyester (1981), Hairspray (1988), Serial Mom (1994), and Cry-Baby (1990). Waters has also written several books, including Shock Value (1981), Crackpot (1986), and Role Models (2010). He has also written for television, including the series Tales from the Crypt and the film A Dirty Shame (2004). Waters has been honored with numerous awards, including the Filmmaker on the Edge Award at the Provincetown International Film Festival in 2006, the Filmmaker's Award at the San Francisco International Film Festival in 2007, and the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Berlin International Film Festival in 2008. In 2008, Waters was planning to make a children's Christmas film called Fruitcake, starring Johnny Knoxville and Parker Posey. Filming was planned for November 2008, but it was shelved in January 2009. In 2010, Waters told the Chicago Tribune that "Independent films that cost $5 million are very hard to get made. I sold the idea, got a development deal, got paid a great salary to write it-and now the company is no longer around, which is the case with many independent film companies these days".

Growing up in Baltimore in the 1950s, John Waters was not like other children; he was obsessed by violence and gore, both real and on the screen. With his weird counter-culture friends as his cast, he began making silent 8mm and 16mm films in the mid-'60s; he screened these in rented Baltimore church halls to underground audiences drawn by word of mouth and street leafleting campaigns. As his filmmaking grew more polished and his subject matter more shocking, his audiences grew bigger, and his write-ups in the Baltimore papers more outraged.
