John Wooden was an American basketball player and coach. He was born on October 14, 1910 in Hall, Indiana. He attended Purdue University, where he was a three-time All-American and was named the National Player of the Year in 1932. He then went on to coach at Indiana State University and UCLA, where he won 10 NCAA championships in 12 years. He was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 1973. Wooden was known for his "Pyramid of Success," a set of principles that he believed were essential for success in basketball and in life. He was also known for his emphasis on fundamentals and his ability to motivate his players. He was a mentor to many of the game's greatest players, including Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Bill Walton, and Magic Johnson. Wooden died on June 4, 2010 at the age of 99. He was widely regarded as one of the greatest coaches in the history of basketball.
