Jon Shanklin is a British scientist who was born on 29 September, 1953 in Wrexham. He is best known for his work in atmospheric science, particularly in the field of polar stratospheric clouds. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society and a Fellow of the Royal Meteorological Society. Shanklin studied at the University of Manchester, where he obtained a BSc in Physics in 1975 and a PhD in Atmospheric Physics in 1979. He then worked at the British Antarctic Survey from 1979 to 1989, where he was involved in the development of the Halley Research Station. Shanklin has made significant contributions to the understanding of polar stratospheric clouds, ozone depletion, and climate change. He has published over 100 scientific papers and has been awarded numerous awards, including the Royal Meteorological Society's Symons Gold Medal in 2002. Shanklin is currently a Professor of Atmospheric Science at the University of Leeds. He is married with two children.
