Although Joseph Ansell was a career employee of the U.S. Post Office in St Louis, Missouri, he also was part-owner, with his brother Louis K. Ansell, of the Empress Theater in St Louis, a second-run movie house; after 1952, the theater had its own stock company and presented live theater for five years. The theater closed in the 1960s and the building was subsequently demolished.
