Joyce C. Lashof is a 96-year-old American physician who was born on March 27, 1926 in Oman. She is best known for her work in public health, particularly in the areas of health policy and health services research. She is the former Dean of the School of Public Health at the University of California, Berkeley, and the former President of the Institute of Medicine. Lashof earned her medical degree from the University of California, San Francisco in 1951. She then completed a residency in internal medicine at the University of California, Los Angeles. She went on to become a professor of medicine at the University of California, San Francisco, and later served as the Dean of the School of Public Health at the University of California, Berkeley. Lashof has served on numerous boards and committees, including the National Academy of Sciences, the Institute of Medicine, and the National Institutes of Health. She has also served as a consultant to the World Health Organization and the United Nations. Lashof is married to Dr. Robert Lashof, a professor emeritus of medicine at the University of California, San Francisco. They have two children.

Lashof was married to Richard Lashof, a math professor at the University of Chicago and had three children, Judith, who died in 2018, Carol, and Dan.

1967

Lashof joined the Department of Preventive Medicine at the University of Illinois College of Medicine. Lashof was Director of the Mile Square Health Center in Chicago, which serves disadvantaged communities, from 1967 to 1971. She went on to become Director of Community Medicine at Presbyterian-St. Luke’s Hospital in Chicago. In 1973, she became the first woman to be Director of the State of Illinois Public Health Department. In 1977 she was appointed Deputy Assistant Secretary for Health at the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare in Washington, D.C. In 1981 she was appointed Dean of the School of Public Health at the University of California, Berkeley.

Lashof graduated from Duke University in 1946, followed by the Woman's Medical College of Pennsylvania. She completed her residency in internal medicine at Montefiore Hospital.
