Juan Tizol was a Puerto Rican trombonist, composer, and arranger. He is best known for his work with Duke Ellington, with whom he wrote the jazz standards "Caravan" and "Perdido". He also wrote the music for the Broadway musical "Jump for Joy". Tizol was born in San Juan, Puerto Rico, on January 20, 1900. He began playing the trombone at the age of 12, and by the age of 16 he was playing professionally in Puerto Rico. In 1921, he moved to New York City and joined the orchestra of Wilbur Sweatman. He then joined the orchestra of Duke Ellington in 1929, and remained with the band until 1944. During his time with Ellington, Tizol wrote some of the band's most famous compositions, including "Caravan" and "Perdido". He also wrote the music for the Broadway musical "Jump for Joy". After leaving Ellington, Tizol worked as a freelance arranger and composer, writing for films, television, and other musical acts. Tizol died in San Juan, Puerto Rico, on April 23, 1984. He was 84 years old.
