She was best known for her roles in the plays Macbeth and Medea, and for her Academy Award-nominated performance in the film Rebecca. Anderson was born on 10 February 1897 in Adelaide, Australia. She began her career in Australia, performing in plays and films. In 1925, she moved to the United States and began appearing in Broadway plays. She was nominated for a Tony Award for her performance in the play Macbeth in 1948. In 1940, Anderson made her film debut in the Alfred Hitchcock classic Rebecca. She was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her performance. She went on to appear in many other films, including The Ten Commandments, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, and The Nun's Story. Anderson was married twice, first to actor Basil Sydney and then to actor and director Cedric Hardwicke. She had no children. Anderson died on 3 January 1992 in Santa Barbara, California.
