Judith Wright was an Australian poet, environmentalist, and political activist. She was born on 31 May 1915 in Thalgarrah Station, near Armidale, New South Wales, Australia. She was the daughter of a grazier and a schoolteacher. Wright was educated at the University of Sydney, where she studied English and French literature. She was a founding member of the Sydney Push, a group of intellectuals who met to discuss literature, politics, and philosophy. Wright's first collection of poetry, The Moving Image, was published in 1946. She went on to publish several more collections of poetry, including The Gateway (1953), Woman to Man (1959), and The Other Half (1965). Wright was also an environmentalist and political activist. She was a founding member of the Wildlife Preservation Society of Queensland and the Australian Conservation Foundation. She was also a vocal opponent of the Vietnam War and a supporter of the Aboriginal land rights movement. Wright was awarded the Order of Australia in 1983 and the Queen's Gold Medal for Poetry in 1988. She died in 2000 at the age of 84.
