Jules Bass is an American producer, director, and soundtrack composer. He is best known for his work on Rankin/Bass Productions, which he co-founded with Arthur Rankin, Jr. in 1960. He has produced and directed numerous animated television specials, including Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, Frosty the Snowman, and The Hobbit. Bass was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and attended the University of Pennsylvania, where he studied music and film. After graduating, he moved to New York City and began working in television. He met Rankin in 1960, and the two formed Rankin/Bass Productions. Bass has composed the music for many of Rankin/Bass' productions, including The Hobbit, The Last Unicorn, and The Return of the King. He has also written and directed several feature films, including The Daydreamer and The Flight of Dragons. Bass has been nominated for several Emmy Awards and has won two Daytime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Animated Program. He has also been nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Album for Children.
