Throughout her career, Julia Weertman has made numerous contributions to the field of materials science and engineering. She is credited with developing the first tribology laboratory in the United States, and she has published more than 200 papers on the subject. She has also served as a professor at Northwestern University since 1965, and she was the first woman to be appointed to the faculty of the university's Department of Materials Science and Engineering. In addition to her academic achievements, Julia Weertman has been honored with numerous awards and accolades. She was inducted into the National Academy of Engineering in 1988, and she was the first woman to receive the Tribology Gold Medal from the Society of Tribologists and Lubrication Engineers in 1992.
