Williams was born in The Bronx, New York, and grew up in the South Bronx. He attended the High School of Music and Art, and later studied at the Manhattan School of Music. He has composed music for television, film, and the stage, and has conducted orchestras around the world. Williams has won numerous awards, including two Tony Awards, two Drama Desk Awards, and a Grammy Award. He has also been nominated for an Emmy Award and a Golden Globe Award. Williams is married to singer and actress Vanessa Williams, and they have four children. He is currently the artistic director of the Broadway Inspirational Voices, a gospel choir based in New York City.
