Karen Shakhnazarov is a Russian film director, screenwriter, and producer. He is best known for his films White Sun of the Desert (1970), The Messenger (1985), and Burnt by the Sun (1994). He has also directed several television series, including The White Guard (2008) and The Thaw (2009). Shakhnazarov was born in Krasnodar, Russia, on 8 July 1952. He graduated from the All-Union State Institute of Cinematography (VGIK) in 1975. He began his career as a director in the 1970s, directing the films White Sun of the Desert (1970) and The Messenger (1985). In 1994, Shakhnazarov directed the critically acclaimed film Burnt by the Sun, which won the Grand Prix at the Cannes Film Festival and the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. He has since directed several other films, including The Star (2002), The Sun (2005), and The Edge (2010). Shakhnazarov has also directed several television series, including The White Guard (2008) and The Thaw (2009). He is currently the president of the Russian film studio Mosfilm.
