She was previously a Member of the European Parliament for North West England from 1994 to 1997. Hollern was educated at the University of Manchester, where she studied politics and economics. She then worked as a research assistant for the Labour Party in the House of Commons. Hollern was first elected to the European Parliament in 1994, representing North West England. She was re-elected in 1999 and served until 2004. In 1997, Hollern was elected to the House of Commons as the Member of Parliament for Blackburn. She has held the seat ever since. Hollern has held a number of positions in the Labour Party, including Shadow Minister for Women and Equalities, Shadow Minister for Health, and Shadow Minister for Education.
