Kate Thwaites is an Australian journalist and politician. She was born on 19 January 1980 in Melbourne, Victoria. She is currently the Member of Parliament for Jagajaga in the Australian House of Representatives. Thwaites attended the University of Melbourne, where she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in 2002. She then went on to complete a Master of Arts in International Relations at the University of Melbourne in 2004. Thwaites began her career as a journalist, working for the ABC, SBS, and Fairfax Media. She then moved into politics, working as a senior adviser to the Minister for Education, Science and Training in the Rudd Government. In 2019, Thwaites was elected to the House of Representatives as the Member for Jagajaga. She is a member of the Australian Labor Party and is currently the Shadow Minister for Ageing and Seniors. Thwaites is married to fellow journalist and political adviser, David Thwaites. They have two children.

According to The Guardian, her victory was "was almost a direct result of [Josh] Burns' win in Macnamara, with the Labor left concerned about its female representation".
