Kath Venn was born into a political family, her father being a member of the Tasmanian Parliament. She attended the University of Tasmania and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in 1947. She then went on to work as a teacher and later as a lecturer in the Department of Education at the University of Tasmania. In 1972, Venn was elected to the Tasmanian House of Assembly as a member of the Liberal Party. She was the first woman to be elected to the Tasmanian Parliament. During her time in Parliament, she was a strong advocate for women's rights and was instrumental in the passage of the Equal Opportunity Act in Tasmania. Venn served as a minister in the Tasmanian government from 1982 to 1989, and was the first woman to hold a cabinet position in the state. She was also the first woman to be appointed as Speaker of the House of Assembly. Venn retired from politics in 1992 and was made a Member of the Order of Australia in 1993 for her service to the Tasmanian Parliament.
