Ken Buesseler is an American oceanographer and marine chemist. He was born in 1959 in Wisconsin and grew up in the Midwest. He received his B.S. in chemistry from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1981 and his Ph.D. in oceanography from the University of Washington in 1987. Buesseler is currently a senior scientist at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) and a professor of marine chemistry at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). He is also the director of the Center for Marine and Environmental Radioactivity (CMER) at WHOI. Buesseler has conducted research on the ocean's role in the global carbon cycle, the fate of radionuclides in the ocean, and the impacts of climate change on marine ecosystems. He has published more than 200 scientific papers and has been the recipient of numerous awards, including the National Science Foundation's Alan T. Waterman Award and the American Geophysical Union's Maurice Ewing Medal. Buesseler is married and has two children. He enjoys sailing, skiing, and playing the guitar.
