Kenny Barron is an American jazz pianist, composer, and educator. He has been performing for over 50 years and has released over 70 albums. He has won nine Grammy Award nominations and is a member of the National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Masters. He has been a professor at Rutgers University since 2001. Kenny Barron was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on June 9, 1943. He began playing piano at the age of five and was soon performing in local clubs. He attended the Settlement Music School and the Granoff School of Music in Philadelphia. In the 1960s, Barron moved to New York City and began performing with jazz greats such as Dizzy Gillespie, Stan Getz, and Freddie Hubbard. He also performed with the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra and the Kenny Dorham/Joe Henderson Quintet. In the 1970s, Barron began recording as a leader and released his first album, Sunset to Dawn, in 1975. He has since released over 70 albums as a leader and has collaborated with many of the top jazz musicians of the day. Kenny Barron has won nine Grammy Award nominations and is a member of the National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Masters. He has been a professor at Rutgers University since 2001. He has also been a visiting professor at the Juilliard School and the Manhattan School of Music.
