Kevin Henke is an American illustrator and writer. He is best known for his illustrations in the children's books of author Kevin Henkes, including the Caldecott Medal-winning book, "Owen". He has also written and illustrated several of his own books, including "Lilly's Purple Plastic Purse" and "Julius, the Baby of the World". Henke was born in Racine, Wisconsin, and attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 1982. He then attended the Rhode Island School of Design, where he earned a Master of Fine Arts degree in 1984. Henke has been illustrating books since the mid-1980s. He has illustrated over 50 books, including those written by other authors, as well as his own. He has won numerous awards for his work, including the Caldecott Medal for "Owen" in 1998, the Boston Globe-Horn Book Award for "Lilly's Purple Plastic Purse" in 1997, and the Theodor Seuss Geisel Award for "Julius, the Baby of the World" in 1999. Henke currently lives in Madison, Wisconsin, with his wife and two children. He continues to write and illustrate books, and is also a professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
