King Floyd was born in New Orleans, Louisiana, and began singing in church at the age of five. He was inspired by the music of Ray Charles, Sam Cooke, and Otis Redding. He began performing professionally in the early 1960s, and released his first single, "Groove Me," in 1969. The song became a hit, reaching number one on the R&B charts and number six on the Billboard Hot 100. Floyd released several more singles throughout the 1970s, including "What Our Love Needs," "Baby Let Me Kiss You," and "I Feel Like Dynamite." He also released several albums, including King Floyd (1970), Groove Me (1971), and What Our Love Needs (1973). In the 1980s, Floyd moved to Los Angeles and began working as a session musician. He also wrote and produced songs for other artists, including the Gap Band and the Pointer Sisters. Floyd has continued to perform and record throughout the years, releasing his most recent album, Soul Street, in 2017. He has also been inducted into the Louisiana Music Hall of Fame.
