Klaus Barbie was a German SS and Gestapo officer during World War II. He was known as the "Butcher of Lyon" for his involvement in the deportation and torture of Jews and resistance fighters in France. After the war, he was tried and convicted of war crimes in France and sentenced to life in prison. He was released in 1951 and fled to Bolivia, where he lived until his death in 1991. Klaus Barbie was born on October 25, 1913 in Bad Godesberg, Germany. He was the son of a schoolteacher and a homemaker. He joined the Nazi Party in 1933 and the SS in 1934.
