Konstantin Grachev was a Soviet military officer and politician who served as the Minister of Defense of the Soviet Union from 1988 to 1991. He was born on 17 April, 1927 in Saint Petersburg, Russia. Grachev graduated from the Leningrad Military Engineering Academy in 1950 and served in the Soviet Army until his retirement in 1988. He was promoted to the rank of General of the Army in 1985. In 1988, Grachev was appointed Minister of Defense of the Soviet Union, a position he held until the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991. He was also a member of the Supreme Soviet of the Soviet Union from 1989 to 1991. Grachev was a strong supporter of Mikhail Gorbachev's reforms and was instrumental in the withdrawal of Soviet forces from Afghanistan in 1989. He also oversaw the dissolution of the Warsaw Pact in 1991. Grachev died on 28 April, 2021 at the age of 96. He was survived by his wife, two sons, and two daughters.
