Kwang-Chu Chao was born in Shanghai, China, on 7 June 1925. He is an engineer and a professor emeritus at the University of California, Berkeley. He is best known for his contributions to the field of engineering, particularly in the areas of structural dynamics, earthquake engineering, and finite element analysis. Kwang-Chu Chao received his bachelor's degree in civil engineering from the National Central University in Taiwan in 1949. He then went on to earn his master's degree in civil engineering from the University of California, Berkeley in 1952. He received his doctorate in civil engineering from the University of California, Berkeley in 1956. Kwang-Chu Chao has been a professor at the University of California, Berkeley since 1956. He has also served as a visiting professor at the University of Tokyo, the University of Illinois, and the University of California, Los Angeles. He has been a consultant to numerous engineering firms and government agencies. Kwang-Chu Chao has received numerous awards and honors for his work, including the National Science Foundation's Presidential Young Investigator Award in 1985, the American Society of Civil Engineers' Norman Medal in 1988, and the National Academy of Engineering's Charles Martin Duke Award in 1989.
